Max

After the gas station incident, Max tracked her all the way to Houston.

Instead of going straight to a hotel, she went to a giant mansion on the beach—the place was packed with overpriced cars and drunk people. Good Lord, she can’t stay out of trouble.

Suddenly, he growled low in his chest—there was a dragon shifter nearby. A male. His lip curled back; he hadn’t expected that.

He parked his car down the street and took off at a brisk jog. He kept himself in check enough to stay hidden from any neighbors that might be out.

The “house” was more of a wealthy monstrosity, and it was set back from the road behind a gate. He ran through the gate before slowing his pace to a casual walk. He had to appear like he was attending the party. Luckily, no one was dressed in black tie, and quite a few people were in swimwear out by the pool. The majority of them appeared to be on some kind of mind-altering substance.

His mate was at a house full of drunk and high people, and there was a male dragon shifter there. Max hardly held it together as he made it to the patio, but then he saw Jordan. His mate. Something in his chest felt bigger when he thought that; maybe it was his inner dragon puffing up. However, she was standing close to a man. No—that’s not a man, he realized. That’s the shifter.

A hot burning rage filled his veins. Back off, she’s mine.

Mine, his dragon echoed.

She didn’t belong anywhere near the other dragon.

And how was there an extremely wealthy dragon on the outskirts of Houston that wasn't on his radar? Did Rhett know this shifter was here? Max quickly moved away before Jordan noticed him. Her heartbeat was normal, so she wasn’t scared, and she wasn’t in any danger.

He needed to get some space before he shifted into his dragon form and flew in, grabbed her, and got her the fuck away from this stupid party. Even outside the grounds, he was now attuned enough to her heartbeat to know if she was in danger. She wasn’t—not yet—but he’d be paying close attention.

He crept out toward the edge of the lake where no one would see or hear him before picking up his phone and dialing Rhett’s number. When the ringing stopped, he didn't even let Rhett say hello. “Did you know there's a male shifter living in Houston? At least a millionaire. He owns a big, gaudy house. Looks like something of a playboy. Lake, infinity pool, at least a hundred people, all of them are drunk or high. ”

“Well hello, Max, I’m good, how are you?” Rhett asked sarcastically.

“I don't have time for chitchat,” Max snapped.

Rhett’s voice changed. “Do you need me? I can be in Houston in two hours," he offered.

"No, not yet. I'm doing surveillance right now.” He closed his eyes and concentrated. He couldn’t feel the presence of a demon, so he felt he could handle it.
